Obamacare- Individual Mandate

The new health care laws are beginning to take effect. Beginning in 2014 each individual will be required to have “minimum essential coverage” or pay a penalty. Minimum essential coverage is:

  • Coverage under certain government-sponsored plans
  • Employer-sponsored plans
  • Plans in the individual market
  • Grandfathered health plans
  • Any other health benefits coverage (state health benefit plans)

For 2014 any individual who does not have health care will pay $95 per uninsured person or 1% of household income over the filing threshold. This penalty gradually increases to $695 per person or 2.5% of household income in 2016.

Individuals and families should consult their insurance agent to make sure an adequate plan is in place for them by January 2014. Our office has contacts that can assist you. Please feel free to call us at (435) 752-9700.
