TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) is the organization that audits the IRS and its processes. TIGTA recently issued two disturbing reports as reported by Terri Eyden, Senior Editor at AccountingWEB:
“Today we cover two recent and concerning reports from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). First, after analyzing 2010 tax returns, TIGTA identified close to 1.5 million tax returns the IRS hadn’t detected as potentially fraudulent due to identify theft. In its second report, TIGTA said that as of June 14, 2012, 691 of 13,591 IRS contractor employees had incurred $5.4 million in federal tax debt. And while 339 of those employees had agreed to pay the taxes they owe, 352 weren’t even on a payment plan to resolve their debt.” |
